How to Get Stimulus Money for Adopting Electronic Health Records
At the end of last year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that would implement the incentive payment provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Payments will be offered to Medicare and Medicaid providers and facilities that adopt and “meaningfully use” electronic health record (EHR) technology, and this proposed rule is the first indication of how CMS plans to define ARRA’s requirements.
I recently weighed in on some of the basic requirements for collecting this money in an article on HIT News.
“Providers now have clear, objective criteria that they must meet in order to be considered to be making ‘meaningful use’ of EHRs,” I tell HIT News. “Although the regulation does establish clear and objective criteria, as well as the tools for measuring whether the particular objectives have been met, it cannot be said that it will be simple or easy for any provider or hospital to meet the criteria of meaningful use. The criteria address a wide range of different issues and require a lot.”
